DEVELOPEMENT
First Stage went through rigorous development throughout the creative process ranging from experimentation through sketches, model making, animation and photography. On this page you will see this process in full.
Following the Engagement Task, I began sketching the outcomes of the scenes created by all participants, both from IED and Men's Shed members. Sketching helps me to focus my thoughts on understanding each scene created and trying to communicate how it could potentially be used in the context of the conversation of the builder of each set.
Sketching the sets allowed me to explore different forms, shapes and bursts of colour created by the Building Blocks Colour schemes.
While they were quick sketches, they helped me to visualise each scene as a potential installation which would inform the design. After which I can then begin the next stage of the development.
SKETCH MODELS
To bring the sketches into reality and better understand them as environments, I started making sketch models made from a variety of materials while narrowing down to six 'Sets'.
The maquettes I produced from the sketches had quite a visually bright and playful aesthetic which works well with a mental wellbeing theme. After putting them all together, it cluster of models seemed almost like a village of installations. This brought on thoughts that this idea of a village could potentially be brought to life as a series of mental health installations around the city of Dundee which the public can explore and find as part of their own journeys to improve mental health.
MAQUETTE DEVEOPEMENT
The next stage was trying to bring the forms from these models into a real structure after seeing how these space can be used in the context of mental health.
I created these GIF animations with a mixture of photography and photoshop - not only to edit but to save them in the correct file type to loop the animation.
I used a very simple way to utilise stop motion animation (an interest of mine from a young age) to illustrate the functionality of the structure which I developed from the sketch models.
To the left; the structure in expansion.
Below; a wing concept in motion.
While I may have gotten carried away with the quick stop motion, I wanted to show the forms which would be the 'Main Stage' of the structure and then the form which would become the wings.
Image to the left: A center Cover for the magazine illustrating the various forms I explored for the 'Mian Stage'.
Again, this project explored rigorous development; looking back to the architectural forms as another way of influencing the structures, looking at motion and adaptability - after all, this does need to be transportable and flexible.
Possible options for the 'Main Stage' shapes.
These forms being taken further for the design of the wings.
Thinking about adaptability of the entire structure.
The Concept
Development produced the structure to the left - a 1:20 model made using design produced on Sketchup taken to Layout > then Adobe illustrator for refinement and organisation > Laser cut and finally sprayed and assembled to create this concept.
